A bit about ourselves......
In 1980 we were the first Sanctuary to be established in the Algarve. We do not kill and therefore feel we are entitled to call ourselves a Sanctuary. Once an animal is in our care they are protected for life. We have some dogs who are unhomable because of their past treatment and / or injuries. But we repeat we never kill.
Over the last 24 years our work has not only entailed the rescue of domestic animals but birds and other wildlife, plus an ongoing programme of sterilisation which we believe to be the only humane way to reduce the numbers of stray animals. The past 10 years have shown an amazing awareness of the benefits of sterilisation amongst Portuguese and foreigners alike. How you can help us.....
MAKE A DONATION - As you can imagine the costs of our work are ever increasing.
VOLUNTEER - Our need for volunteer workers who are dedicated to the care of animals is immediate.
SET UP A CAT SHELTER - We seem to be the only people in this area who will take responsibility for cats and are therefore looking for those who love cats to set up a shelter, financed by us, where the female cats can be nursed for a 3-day period after sterilisation before being returned to her habitat.
PARTNERSHIP SOUGHT - 3 years ago we appealed for help in the form of finding a partner, the situation is more urgent and we appeal once again to anyone who would like to share in a sanctuary with expansion in mind, instead of closure. We are looking for someone of integrity who would join us here at the Sanctuary working side by side with us, it must be someone already experienced in Animal Welfare work. There is heartbreak but also rewards not found in many other vocations. The love and trust given one by an animal who has known nothing but abuse, whose eyes reflect their gratitude, who vie with one another to be first to push their head into your hand, who greet you with overwhelming joy, is what makes this work so satisfying.
ADOPT AN ANIMAL - All our animals are vaccinated and sterilised, everyone an individual, so before you go out and buy an animal why not contact us.To view just some of the delightful animals we have waiting for loving and secure homes, click here.
