In 1980 we were the first animal protection society to be established in the Algarve. We do not euthanase until the animal itself decides that life is not worth living, and therefore feel we are entitled to call ourselves a Sanctuary.
Once an animal is in our care they are protected for life. We also take those animals who are unhomable because of previous cruel treatment and/or injuries whom other shelters refuse. Our latest unhomable dog was thrown out on a roundabout in Lagos – he has three legs and is totally blind.
We use the most effective and humane way to cut down the number of stray dogs and cats, by carrying out a programme of sterilisation and rehoming.
No longer are holidaymakers driven away by the upsetting sight of starving and ill animals wandering around with nobody to care for them. We think you will agree that our efforts greatly benefit those involved with tourism on this beautiful coast.
LAPS needs your support to continue this work. It costs 50-130 euros to sterilise one animal but the cost of providing injections, microchipping, food, maintenance, vets and telephone bills amounts to almost 15,000 euros a year.
Many tourists are also appalled that this country still allows animal circus's and bullfights – we actively campaign against them.

VOLUNTEER – Our need for volunteer workers who are dedicated to the care of animals is immediate.
PARTNERSHIP SOUGHT – We are looking for someone of integrity who would join us here at the Sanctuary. Someone already experienced in animal welfare work. There are heartbreaks but also rewards not found in many other vocations. The love and trust given one by an animal who has known nothing but abuse, whose eyes reflect their gratitude, who vie with one another to be first to push their head into your hand, who greet you with overwhelming joy, is what makes this work so satisfying.
ADOPTION – All our animals are vaccinated and sterilised, everyone an individual, so before you go out and buy an animal why not think about a rescue one that will be truly grateful for your love.
